A compact motorhome that doesn’t live like one. Most couples looking at a six-and-a-half metre motorhome accept a trade-off going in. You get something you can park, manoeuvre down a single-track road and take on a ferry without wincing, and in return you give up living space. The seating becomes the bed. The table gets stowed. Every evening ends the same way, clearing the surfaces and rebuilding the furniture.

The Bailey Ascent 64-2 is Bailey’s answer to that, and it’s a genuinely new model rather than a carried-over layout. The entire rear of the vehicle is given over to a dedicated U-shaped lounge, and it stays a lounge.

The U-shape is the most sociable seating arrangement there is. Two people can sit facing each other with legs stretched out, or one of you can lie along a settee with a book while the other cooks. Bring a couple of friends back to the pitch for a drink and there’s somewhere for everyone to sit without anyone perching.

Above it sits an electrically operated drop-down double bed. At the touch of a button it descends into place, fully made up if you leave the bedding on it, and in the morning it retracts back into the roof and your lounge is exactly as you left it. No cushion Tetris, no lifting a table onto its supports in the dark, no wondering where the infill panel went.

For a couple touring for a fortnight, this is the difference between enjoying the space and managing it.
